Process Research & Development Chemists
Our mission is to work as an interdisciplinary team that enables the discovery, development and commercialization of new drugs through the creation of quality synthetic processes. Chemists are responsible for route scouting and the design of safe, efficient and robust processes for the synthesis of drug candidates with the overarching goal of gathering fundamental process knowledge, scaling and transitioning such processes to manufacturing.
Requirements
Eligible candidates will have:
- a doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D.) in organic chemistry with zero to three years of additional related research experience during the current school year, scheduled to graduate in winter or spring.
- a strong background in the theory and practice of synthetic organic chemistry, excellent problem-solving skills and a thorough understanding of synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms.
- expertise in the purification and characterization of organic compounds.
- good oral/written communication skills and a desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
Drug Discovery Chemists
Chemists are responsible for the design and synthesis of new agents for the potential treatment of human diseases with emphasis in neuroscience, cardiovascular/metabolic, virology, immunology and oncology disease areas. Research chemists will apply modern techniques in organic chemistry and utilize current medicinal chemistry practices to solve problems of relevance to the assigned project and therapeutic area while supervising a research associate.

- a doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D.) in organic chemistry with zero to three years of additional related research experience during the current school year, scheduled to graduate in winter or spring.
- the ability to design and execute multistep synthesis of complex organic molecules using modern techniques in organic chemistry.
- expertise in the purification and characterization of organic compounds.
- excellent problem-solving skills and a thorough understanding of synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms.
- good oral/written communication skills and a desire to work in a collaborative team environment.
Process Research & Development Chemical Engineers
Chemical engineers at Bristol-Myers Squibb work on synthetic organic chemical processes for creating active pharmaceutical compounds, in the formulation development of final dosage forms. These efforts involve experimental study of the process in the laboratory as well as scale-up in pilot plants. Specific unit operations that require in-depth investigation in the synthetic area include reaction, purification, distillation, crystallization, separation, and drying. In formulation-development areas of study include blending, milling, granulation, tablet compression, and coating. Some engineers specialize in technology areas such as hazards testing and analysis, hydrogenation, process modeling, and chromatography. Chemical engineers play a key role in scale-up of processes in on-site pilot plants, and also perform technology transfer to vendors and manufacturing sites. Most positions involve a mixture of laboratory science, process documentation, and execution in the pilot plant.
Requirements
Eligible candidates will have:
- a doctorate of philosophy (Ph.D.), master’s and/or bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering during the current school year, scheduled to graduate in winter or spring.
- experience in pharmaceutical development from zero to two years (preferred).
- strong collaboration skills, project management and problem-solving capabilities.
- a strong understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals, laboratory and/or pilot plant experience.
- ability to work in a team environment with people from other disciplines and thrive in a multifunctional team environment.
